Building green today is more than a trend. Hemp is a natural material with many uses for construction and decoration. Decryption by Sébastien Le Borgne, Commercial Director at Technichanvre. Interview by Bérangère Larivaud

What is hemp?

Hemp is an annual plant with a short cycle of 100 days. It is sown in April-May and harvested in September-October. It grows on most soils and does not have large water requirements.

What was hemp originally used for?

In the past, hemp was cultivated as the first "cropping head", that is to say before another crop to prepare the land. Indeed, it gives a good quality of soil: aerated, clean, without weeds. It does not require pesticides or herbicides. Hemp was also cultivated a lot during the time of sailing, in the 18th and 19th centuries. Fiber was then used to make ropes, sails, but also clothing.

How long have we been using hemp in the building industry?

This use of hemp developed in the 1990s. There are around thirty varieties of hemp approved, either for seed or for straw. It is from straw that we extract the useful material for the building: on the one hand the hemp fiber, on the other hand the hemp, which is the wood of the plant.

What do we make with the hemp seed, fiber and hemp seed?

The seed is used to make edible oil, oil cake for animal feed and cosmetics. The fiber is generally reworked to make insulating panels and rolls. This use is in full development. But it is also used in the automobile to stiffen plastic in place of petroleum derivatives. We also make paper, clothing and linens. As for chènevotte, it is mixed with lime mortar to make floor tiles, wall formwork, roof formwork that is poured from the outside and which replaces conventional insulation, or insulating coatings for the walls.

Where can you buy hemp for building?

At some distributors of traditional materials, at distributors of ecological materials and at manufacturers like Technichanvre. To know more :
