You plan to move soon and with all the tasks to be accomplished to prepare the transport, gather your things and arrange, you are afraid of forgetting? However, it only takes a little organization and anticipation for everything to go well. Once the countdown has started, follow this step-by-step retro-planning to organize yourself without stress and arrive at your destination with a smile!

3 months before

- Terminate your current lease by filing a notice of departure by registered mail with acknowledgment of receipt. - Register the children in the new school, request the transfer of their schooling records. - Have quotes drawn up by removal companies. If you wish to move on your own, assess the volume to be transported and reserve a truck for hire for D-day.

2 months before

- Notify the various administrations: social security, mutual, CAF, pension fund, ANPE, URSSAF etc. - Notify your bank and prepare the closure or transfer of your accounts if you change branches. - Make an appointment with your gas, water and electricity supplier for the latest meter reading and the termination of the contract.

1 month before

- Plan an order to redirect mail by post and request free address change cards to send to your contacts to notify them of your move. - Stock up on cardboard boxes (from your mover, in packaging stores or at merchants in your neighborhood), bubble wrap and solid adhesive tape. - Make a request to the town hall of your new home to obtain the release of a location for the truck on D-Day if you live in the city, or to access a pedestrian street. - Make an appointment with the owner, the management or the real estate agency of your current accommodation to make an inventory if you are a tenant. - Notify of your change of address the subscription services of newspapers or magazines that you receive at home. - Start packing what will not be useful before the move: books, silverware, clothes, accessories and equipment out of season (skis, quilts and blankets in summer, inflatable pool and shoes open in winter for example), what is stored in the attic, in the garage or in the cellar ... - Ask for "moving leave" with your employer and provide him with your new lease or the contract with the mover as proof. - Take the opportunity to sort: get rid of unnecessary things at the recycling center, from associations or call the services of a professional. If you have a little time, you can try to sell the business you no longer want on the internet or by participating in flea markets. - Number the boxes as you go along and make a list of everything you have packed. This list will make it easier for you to locate things after you move in. - Gradually empty the pantry and freezer reserves. - If you are moving on your own, make sure that a few friends are available to help you and watch the truck on the street, but also to keep children or animals during operations. - Recover scattered belongings: effects left in deposit or repair at the shoemaker's, the retouching service or the dry cleaning, books and films loaned to friends, rented or borrowed from the library.

1 week before

- Package everything you don't need daily. Keep only the bare necessities for cooking, grooming and last minute small crafts. Pack a crate or carton of what you may need during the move or during installation: household products, rags and equipment, flashlight, tools, first aid kit. - Back up the data on your computers before transport. - Find out about the weather forecast on D-Day to keep a raincoat, boots, hats or spare items on hand if necessary.

2-3 days before

- Empty and unplug the freezer and refrigerator. - Once the furniture is empty, block the doors and drawers and tape the keys inside. - Tape the cables to household or electronic devices so as not to lose them, as well as the screws used to fix the shelves or small decorative elements. - Notify the neighbors, the concierge or the caretaker of the date of the move. Check that the elevator works and agree on a place for storing and transporting furniture and boxes on D-day. The day before - Keep everything you need to clean after emptying the premises: sponges, broom, cleaning products , gloves, mop and some tools, and enough to make small repairs: plaster, spatula (very useful for filling holes in walls) and some rags. - Provide water and something to eat as well as a snack for those who came to help you! - Keep a cardboard box with a first aid kit, toilet paper, something to change yourself, what you need to wash and prepare food (cutlery, can opener, etc.). Chances are that it will be useful on D-Day or just arrived.

D-day

- If you move yourself, apply the rules of common sense: start with the most bulky furniture and the heaviest boxes before completing with the light boxes. Strap and protect everything to avoid any movement of the load during the journey.

When leaving your old home

- Make the last tinkering and alterations before the inventory, and clean all the parts carefully. If necessary, call in a cleaning company if time is short before departure. - Turn off all the lights, check that the taps are closed, close the windows and doors. - Remove your name from the mailbox, doorbell, door and intercom

On your arrival in the new accommodation

- Notify the municipal police if the temporary parking decree has not been respected and you cannot find a place for the truck. The offending vehicles will then be removed. - Protect delicate surfaces inside: tarps are particularly useful if it rains (there is little chance that the movers will take off their shoes before stepping on the carpet!) - Reassemble the furniture that has been dismantled and arrange the boxes in their destination room, it will make your work easier when storing their content. Ideally, a piece of furniture should be reassembled by the person who dismantled it. - Leave prominently the boxes containing the items that you will need quickly: clothing, toiletries and cooking. - Put your name on the mailbox, the doorbell, the door and the intercom.

After the move

- Check the condition of fragile furniture or objects. You generally have 3 days to complain by registered letter with A / R to the moving company if something has been damaged during operations or transport. - Remember to change the registration of your vehicle. You have one month after the move to make the change. - If you have changed your municipality, register as soon as possible on the electoral lists. Ready for a peaceful move?
