Why be wary of classic paints and favor natural paints?

Solvent or water based paints are made from volatile organic compounds called VOCs and heavy metals to speed up drying. Elements recognized as polluting and harmful to the environment and to humans, because they have an impact comparable to greenhouse gases. When drying, these volatile components spread more or less far from their place of emission and therefore pollute the space of your house. These toxic substances are also easily flammable and require precautions during their use but also during their storage.

What is natural painting?

Concerned about ecology and their health, many consumers are attracted by natural paints also called ecological paints. The main constituents of these paints are natural raw materials but also biodegradable. In the composition of a natural painting, we find: - The binder (or resin) which plays the role of adhesive. It is also its presence that defines the texture of the paint: matte, satin or shiny. In natural resin, you can find lime, casein, beer, vegetable oils (flax, lavender for example), wheat or rice flour, egg yolk. - The charge which adds thickness to the paint and reduces the cost of pigments, which are often expensive. Mention may be made of chalk such as Meudon white, clay, talc, quartz powder or silica. - The natural pigment that colors the paint. Among the most frequently used, there are several major families: earth-based pigments (ocher, sienna, clay, etc.), mineral-based pigments (calcium carbonate, spinels, zircons, etc.), dyes from vegetable or animal origin (turmeric, nut husk, sandalwood, etc.). - The diluent (or solvent) which brings the liquid aspect to the paint and facilitates the application and drying. Most often it is water, turpentine or citrus terpenes.

How do you recognize natural painting?

Beware, however, of the "natural", "ecological", "organic" and "green" appellations of certain paints, which alone are not enough to guarantee you a secure product. For a paint that minimizes the presence of toxic substances, turn to the French NF Environment eco-label or the European Eco-label, the only ecological label used in all European countries. In France, these two official labels are issued by the French Association for Standardization (AFNOR). Also have the reflex to read the labeling of the products which must be explicit: you become able to identify the four main components. Good to know: the mention "WITHOUT VOC" is authorized when the product does not exceed 5g / liter of VOC.

What choices among ecological paints?

Recognizing natural paint is not enough. Because the choice of a product depends largely on the support it must cover. Thus, lime paints are to be avoided for porous surfaces such as plaster. Like those based on clay, they are better suited indoors. Natural paint with wheat flour and linseed oil can protect the wood very well. In order not to commit an odd number, refer to the advice on the packaging and do not hesitate to seek the help of a professional during your purchase. Finally, whatever the support, the application of an undercoat is recommended.

Natural paints: their advantages and disadvantages

We know their advantages. These less aggressive paints have the merit of being usable without danger to health and the environment in the living rooms of the house, the bedrooms (parental bedroom, child's bedroom, baby bedroom…) but also in nurseries , schools, hospitals ... Less fragrant, they are also easier to apply than other paints. Some brands even go so far as to offer recyclable containers. But with the multiple components necessary to make a natural paint, it is difficult to guarantee a 100% green product. It is also difficult to avoid a few small flaws. Among the annoyances that you will most often notice, the drying time is generally longer. Organic paints are also often more expensive than conventional paints.
